Planning around nature

Preparing the main university campus of Highfield for 25 year expansion

Campus set within suburban area of Southampton, formed of department buildings designed by Basil Spense around landscaped grounds occupying an old quarry. The focus of the campus is its integration in a natural setting. The masterplan focused on urbanising the site, concentrating buildings around primary roads, allowing greater designation of space for parks, gardens and tree planted car parks. New green circulation routes were created to make use of and emphasise the natural setting of the campus. New buildings were bordered by landscape.
